Hispanic Washingtonian’s the Most Affluent in the Country

Recent Census figures are showing that the 700,000 Hispanics that call Washington, D.C. home are the most affluent with a median household income of $61,000.  These figures also shows that one-in-four Hispanic Washingtonian’s have at least a four-year college degree, double the national average.

The capital city has always been a magnet for the highly educated due to the numerous think tanks, government research agencies and embassies in the area.  Many Hispanics in Washington come from their native country already highly educated and work at the numerous international agencies affiliated with their homeland and then decide to stay and become permanent residents.

Defense contracting firms serve as another attraction to highly educated Latinos, especially if they were officers in the military.  Currently five percent of all military officers are Latino.

Central Americans make up the majority of Hispanics in the Washington, D.C. area with many coming from El Salvador and approximately 12 percent are of Mexican descent.
