Gutierrez Signs on to QB for da-Bears
The Chicago Bears signed Matt Gutierrez to a one-year contract and watched him practice on Wednesday. Gutierrez does not have extensive NFL experience but he will possibly gain some this Saturday in Bears preseason game against the Oakland Raiders at home.
Gutierrez played QB for Idaho State and has thrown and completed 2 passes in the NFL for 18 yards.
“He’s a smart guy, he’s been in some good systems,” coach Lovie Smith said. The Bears were in need of a third quarterback due to backup Caleb Hannie suffering a right shoulder sprain that may keep him down for the preseason. Gutierrez spent 2009 on the Kansas City Roster and 2007 and 2008 with New England. The Bears also signed former Houston Texans and University of Cincinnati DB Aaron Webster to a contract and waived G Vince Vance and LB Matt Mayberry.
Matt Gutierrez is only one of two Hispanic quarterbacks in the NFL, Mark Sanchez of the New York Jets is the other. The first Hispanic quarterback in the NFL was Tom Flores who played for the Oakland Raiders in the 1960’s.
