Spanish cyclist Margarita Fullana admitted to having used the forbidden doping substance EPO after a urine test turned out positive for the drug.
Fullana’s case is the latest of four doping cases involving Spanish cyclists: team Mates Ezequiel Mosquera and David García da Pena tested positive for hydroxyethyl starch, and Tour de France winner Alberto Contador, tested positive for Clebuterol.
Spokesmen for Contador were hasty in attributing the positive result to contaminated steak. French sports daily L’Equipe reported Friday however, that the German lab that found a tiny amount of the banned drug clenbuterol in Contador’s urine sample also found plastic residues of the kind that might turn up after a transfusion of blood from a plastic bag.
A blood transfusion would oxygenate blood, leading illegally to a better performance.
All four cyclist have been suspended by the International Cycling Union, and face sanctions as severe as two-year bans.
Fullana regretted her actions on her website; she acknowledged she had committed a “stupid” act and would “accept my sanction and turn the page.”
“Nothing was working out for me and I had the damned chance to get hold of this substance, but in such a small quantity that it made no difference,” Fullana wrote. “I did not improve and my world championship race went like all the others: badly, horrendously. “I have been stupid, but I am brave enough to recognize it. I have spent so many years working to build a sporting career and now through one error that I have made, I have put my foot in it.”

El caso de Fullana se suma al caso de Alberto Contador, ganador del Tour de Francia y a quién se le encontraron rastros de la droga ilegal Clebuterol an el sistema sanguíneo.
El equipo de Contador no esperó para difundir declaraciones en las que atribuyen el positivo, a la presencia de la droga en gran parte de la carne disponible en el mercado Español.
Sin embargo, el laboratorio Alemán a cargo del análisis del examen anti-dopaje, dijeron haber encontrado también rastros de residuos de plástico en su sangre, el tipo de residuos que se encontrarían tras una transfusión de sangre.
Una transfusión de sangre aumentaría el nivel de oxígeno en los glóbulos blancos, aumentando así el rendimiento del deportista.
Dos ciclistas mas, Ezequiel Mosquera y su compañero David García da Pena también resultaron positivos y los cuatro ciclistas han sido suspendidos provisionalmente por la Unión Internacional de Ciclismo, y enfrentan sanciones tan severas como una posible suspensión de dos años.
