Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso is expected to be sidelined for up to three months after fracturing a bone in his right foot during a practice Wednesday at the team’s training facilities in Valdebebas.
Alonso, who was taking part in his first training since undergoing sports hernia surgery in June, was unable to compete this summer for Spain in the Confederations Cup and also missed Real Madrid’s preseason games.
The Spanish international had been expected to suit up for Los Blancos in a friendly Thursday night against Qatari club Al Sadd.
Despite the injury, Real Madrid remains loaded in midfield with stars such as Brazil’s Kaka, German standouts Mesut Özil and Sami Khedira and newly acquired Spanish up-and-comer Isco.
