Tigres beat America on the latter’s home turf 2-0 to regain the lead in Mexico’s Clausura 2013 soccer tourney, which this weekend finished up its regular season and goes into the playoff phase where the top eight teams will vie for the title.
Brazilian Danilinho scored in the 47th minute and Argentina’s Lucas Lobos found the net in the 58th minute in Saturday’s victory, giving Tigres the win, a total of 35 points and undisputed leadership in the tourney.
Tigres racked up a total of 10 wins, five ties and just two defeats during the classification phase of the tournament, and the only team that might have equalled its point total was Atlas, although it lost 0-1 to Leon on Sunday night, thus finishing in third place.
America finished the classification phase in the No. 2 slot with 32 points and a favorable goal differential of 15, and Atlas also had 32 points but a goal differential of 8 points.
Tigres, America and Atlas have already qualified for the playoff phase along with Santos, Morelia, Cruz Azul, Pumas UNAM and Monterrey, although the team’s final rankings - and thus their positioning in the playoffs - remains to be determined.
