Two high-profile men in decidedly macho sports are making waves with very public affirmations of their homosexuality.
Openly-gay boxer Orlando Cruz proposed to his boyfriend, Jose Manuel, via video on Facebook while WWE wrestler Darren Young came out to a TMZ roving reporter.
Darren, 33, is making history by becoming the first openly gay wrestler in the WWE while Cruz made boxing history last October by becoming the first openly-gay boxer. “
The 32-year-old Puerto Rican boxer was prompted to formalize his relationship as he faces a tough battle for the WBO featherweight championship against Orlando Solido in October. Manuel accepted the proposal also via video released on Facebook.
Young was at the Los Angeles airport when a TMZ roving reporter asked him if a gay wrestler could be successful in the WWE. Unexpectedly, he answered “Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay. And I’m happy. I’m very happy.
WWE immediately issued a statement declaring how proud they were of Young and his openness regarding his sexuality.
