The governor, Ney Gonzales Sanchez, announced that elementary and middle school classes will end this friday, three weeks early, due to rumors of gangs targeting schools. Gonzales said he decided to shorten the school year so parents would have less to fear.
Teachers fearing violence in their classes contacted the governor via social networks to inform him that they were done teaching for the year. Classes for the nation’s 30 million students are scheduled to end July 9. The governor is proposing that high school and college classes in the state also end early.
