Five men were gunned down at a rural tavern on Guatemala’s southern Pacific coast, authorities said.

The attack took place Saturday night in Guatalon, a village near Rio Bravo in Suchitepequez province, 165 kilometers (103 miles) south of Guatemala City.

Several unidentified assailants entered the tavern and opened fire, killing Freddy Esau Pol Fuentes, 21; Jose Santiago Pol Fuentes, 26; Juan Orlando Juarez Lemus, 27; Carlos Enrique Bats Aguilar, 28; and Rolando Castillo Mendez, 39.

Police said the killings may have been in reprisal for actions of the victims, who, according to Guatalon residents, were involved in rapes and attempted murder.

Guatemala, a nation of around 14 million people, suffers an average of 15 homicides a day, according to official statistics.
