According to a study by Costa Rica’s Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO), Venezuelans overall consume the most alcohol, with Dominican men coming in second.

The study. Alcohol Drinking Patterns in Latin America, was based on nationwide surveys.

The data show that prevalence of consumption, which is measured as having had at least one drink in the past 12 months, ranges from 31 percent in El Salvador to 83 percent in Venezuela. The average for the nine countries surveyed was 59 percent, with some of the difference being a result of some countries having few people who drink, while in others, drinking is far more common.

As for the amount consumed, the countries’ average consumption of pure alcohol per person was 5.5 liters a year, which is overall lower than that of Europe (13 liters), Canada (9.8 liters), and the U.S. (9.4 liters). However, when broken up, Venezuela’s average annual level of consumption is 8.9 liters per person per year. Second is the Dominican Republic with 8 liters per person.

Broken down even further, Venezuela has the highest percentage of men (ages 18-65) who are binge drinkers – those who drink 60 grams or more of pure alcohol at least once a week – at 32.3 percent. The percentage of women binge drinkers in Venezuela, while substantially lower than that of the men at 9.5 percent, is still higher than those in any of the other nine countries.

Overall, the study found that on average, men in El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Peru, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia and Brazil drink four times for than the women of those countries.
