With a series of nine decrees, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has advanced the causes of 13 candidates for canonization or beatification.

At a private audience with Cardinal Angelo Amato, the prefect of the Congregation, on January 14, Pope Benedict XVI authorized the release of the decrees, which authenticated three miracles, recognized five martyrs, and attested to the “heroic virtue” of five candidates for beatification.

In addition to recognizing the authenticity of a miracle through the intercession of Venerable John Paul II (1920-2005), the Vatican declared the validity of miracles attributed to the intercession of Faustino Perez-Manglano Magro (1946-63) a Spanish student and postulant of the Marianist Fathers and Francisca de Paula de Jesus (1810-95) a Brazilian laywoman who devoted all her time and effort to the construction of a church dedicated to Mary.
