In the latest update of the Brazilian floods in the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco in the northeastern part of the country, more than 600 people remained missing and the death toll has risen to 42 people. Alagoas has bore the brunt of the storm, nearly 20,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed. More than 31,000 people are homeless or displaced in Alagoas, and more than 830 people are injured.
In the neighboring state of Pernamnuco, more than 40,000 people have been left homeless or displaced. President Luiz Incacio Lula da Silva is scheduled to tour the affected areas on Thursday.
The federal government has announced that it will contribute more than $150 million to help with reconstruction.
