Photo: Univision may be looking to reach an English-speaking audience
Univision seems to be rethinking their Spanish-only policy these days in hopes of reaching the ever-growing U.S.-born Hispanic population.
Though it has not been publicized yet, earlier this month, Univision launched an English-language Twitter account called @UnivisionNews. The account posts updates in English to around 4,000 followers. This Twitter account appears to be another in a series of quiet moves to address an English-speaking viewership.
Late last month, Univision.com launched an soccer website for English-speakers, but they did not share any information about it. It was insinuated that a formal announcement would be made in the coming months, but thus far, no announcement has been made.
Also, in an February 26th update, Univision.com staff told the English-speaking audience that “all the top news for U.S. soccer and MLS, European Soccer, and top Mexican and Latin American Leagues” would soon be available.
A Univision spokesperson told Hispanic TV Update, “We are increasingly using social and interactive media, as well as radio, to further engage with our bilingual audience in English and Spanish.”
Univision did express however, that the network has no plans to overhaul its entire policy or strategy, with the spokesperson adding that the network values “the importance and reach of Spanish-language television and remain committed to our strategy.”
The UnivisionNews Twitter profile states that it is, “The #1 Source for Hispanic news covers current events from around the world, with a special focus on the US Hispanic population and Latin America - In English.”
