Just 18 percent of U.S. Hispanics own firearms, compared with 21 percent of African Americans and 33 percent of non-Latino whites, according to a new report from Gallup based on surveys during the period 2007-2012.

Amid a national debate about the possibility of enacting laws to control the sale of arms, Gallup has identified conservative white males over age 30 as the main obstacle to President Barack Obama in this matter.

Forty-five percent of male respondents said they own guns, while only 15 percent of women did.

In terms of ideology, 39 percent of conservatives identified themselves as gun owners, compared with 17 percent of progressives, while 37 percent of married people have guns, as opposed to 22 percent of the unmarried.

Regarding geographical factors, the South stands out as the region with the country’s highest percentage of gun owners - 38 percent - followed by the Midwest, where 29 percent own guns, the West with 27 percent and the East with 21 percent.
