A overnight raid by the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has landed the border city mayor, police chief and city trustee of Columbus, New Mexico in jail.
Federal officials arrested Mayor Eddie Espinoza, Police Chief Angelo Vega and city trustee Blas Gutierrez on suspicion of drug trafficking. The actual charges leveled against the trio will be unsealed in a federal indictment later this afternoon.
Columbus sits three miles from the U.S.-Mexico border and is on the opposite side of the violence-ridden state of Chihuahua, Mexico. In total 11 people were taken into federal custody overnight.
