At least 14 people died and nine others were seriously injured when the pick-up truck in which they were riding crashed into a tree and overturned on a road in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, officials said.
The truck carrying some 30 sugarcane workers struck the tree between the small towns of El Carmen and Ahualulco del Mercado, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the state capital of Guadalajara, Jalisco emergency management officials said Thursday.
They added that the driver of the truck had to have been traveling at high velocity at the time the vehicle slammed into the tree, located on a narrow dirt road that links ranches and rural properties in the area.
Eleven passengers died at the scene and the other three perished while being transferred to different Jalisco hospitals, where the seriously injured were receiving medical treatment.
Firefighters and emergency management teams from Jalisco state and the city of Zapopan were dispatched to the site of the accident.
