Two Chicago-area sisters remain in the hospital after a July 4th celebration went frighteningly wrong.
Kristina Perez, 32, and her sister-in-law Lorena Perez, 39, had to be taken to the hospital with serious injuries after an unofficial fireworks show in West Lawn Park went awry. The South Side show had about 200 people in attendance, and is said to be an annual event despite its illegality.
According to police and witnesses, at around 11 p.m. on Thursday, the illegal fireworks display seemingly tipped over, firing the explosive display into the crowd.
Kristina Perez was hit in the feet and instantly lost her left foot when one of the fireworks exploded on her. Doctors are reportedly attempting to save her other foot, which was also severely damaged.
Lorena, who is married to Kristina’s brother Enrico Perez, was also injured by the stray fireworks, suffering 4th-degree burns on her legs.
Authorities are still investigating the incident and confiscated all fireworks found at the scene.
The sisters were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
