Tigres beat Cruz Azul 2-1 to take first place in the Liga MX Clausura as second-place Atlas managed only a scoreless tie against relegation-bound Queretaro.

Both of Tigres’ goals came from Argentine striker Emanuel Villa, who turns 30 on Monday sitting atop the scoring table with eight tallies, an average of one per match.

The triumph leaves Tigres with 6 wins and 2 ties, good for 20 points. Atlas, 5-2-1, has 17 points, and America and Tijuana each have 16.

America blew a chance to surge ahead of Atlas and Tijuana, losing 1-0 to Santos Laguna on Friday.

Tijuana, which has allowed the fewest goals of any club, topped Atlante 2-0.

Three other players had two-goal performances over the weekend: Hector Mancilla, helping Morelia to a 3-2 win over Pachuca; Marco Fabian, in Chivas’ 2-1 defeat of Leon; and Aldo de Nigris, who shined in Monterrey’s 3-0 thrashing of Puebla.

In other action, Toluca overcame a deficit to beat Chiapas 2-1 and UNAM Pumas blanked San Luis 2-0.
