Ecuador striker and former Club America player Christian “Chucho” Benitez has died of unknown causes at the age of 27.
Benitez, who is currently playing for Al Jaish a Middle Eastern team, had developed an appendicitis that apparently developed into complications leading to respiratory arrest according to family members. The details of his death or cause of death have not been independently confirmed. It is believed he died in a Qatari hospital this morning.
Al Jaish issued the following statement: “Benitez had recently joined the club from Club America for three seasons. The player participated for the first time with the team during yesterday’s match against Qatar Sports Club in the Sheikh Jassem Cup without complaining of any health problems. His sudden departure is a big shock for each member of the technical and administrative staff. He was a player that over the short period he was here was regarded for his high moral character.”
Benitez who hails from Quito, Ecuador was one of the stars of the Ecuadorian national soccer team. He started his career with El Nacional in 2004 eventually playing for the English League team Birmingham City.
Before signing in July with the Al Jaish team he played on the Mexican Liga team, Club America.
