A former official in eastern Spain’s Valencia region was sentenced Wednesday to eight years in prison for his part in embezzling the better part of 1.8 million euros ($2.45 million) intended for aid projects in Nicaragua.
Rafael Blasco, the former regional minister for Solidarity, also faces a 20-year ban from public office.
Seven other former officials and a businessman have been convicted and sentenced in the case, which revolves around the Valencia regional government’s donation of 1.8 million euros to a foundation working in Nicaragua.
Only 43,000 euros actually went to finance projects in the poor Central American nation.
Blasco, a member of Spain’s governing center-right Popular Party, currently holds a seat in the regional legislature.
