A Spanish man who had just won a beer chugging contest is dead after reportedly downing many liters of the alcoholic beverage.
Authorities say Joaquin Alcaraz Gracia, 45, won a beer drinking contest on Wednesday at an annual drinking festival in Murcia’s Gea y Truyols district. Gracia reportedly drank six liters of beer in 20 minutes.
Shortly after winning however, Gracia began vomiting and would not stop. Believing he was suffering from alcohol poisoning, witnesses called emergency medical services.
Gracia was taken to a nearby hospital, but suffered cardiac arrest and died shortly after his arrival.
Contradicting what event officials claim, Murcia Mayor Jose Manuel Gracia says the beer chugging only consumed two to three liters of alcohol. The annual drinking festival has been held for the nearly 20 years.
Though it was believed the excessive amount of alcohol was to blame for the man’s death, authorities had not released an official cause of death as of Friday. Organizers say future festival plans have been suspended.
