A Spanish national has been arrested for being at the helm of a luxury 49-foot sailboat that was carrying $20 million worth of cocaine outside of Boston.
According to AP the U.S. Coast Guard stopped the 49-foot sailboat “Elegance” with 49-year-old Spaniard Benjamin Celma-Sedo and 27-year-old Canadian Hicham Ramzi Nahra aboard. The stop and seizure occurred earlier this week on international waters some 460 miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The Coast Guard asked the Canadian government for permission to board the boat.
Upon inspection the Coast Guard discovered 23 large plastic mesh bags holding 1,360 pounds of coke. Each packet held 25-to-27 kilos of cocaine.
It is believed the boat, carrying a Canadian flag, was heading to Montreal. Upon further investigation it was discovered the boat is actually registered as “Callisto” and was last in Venezuela.
