As the country received the news that nearly 4 million people are unemployed in the country or 20 percent of its population it also heard that Spaniards live longer than anyone else on average in the European Union.
Spain has the highest unemployment rate in Europe and it climbed again last month by 1.2 percent as the country continues to feel the negative effect of the global recession and its deteriorated construction sector. The outlook continues to look grim as the government expects only a slight decrease in the unemployment rate to 19.3 percent by 2011.
On the health side of news coming from Spain things looked a bit more positive. Spaniards have a life expectancy of 81.1 years making it the highest average for all of Europe. Spanish women appear to live longer than men but both genders are plagued by poor health as they age.
