Two supporters of Argentine soccer club Newell’s Old Boys died after men sporting the colors of a rival club fired at a vehicle carrying Newell’s fans, authorities said Monday.
The shooting occurred Sunday night in the city of Rosario, home to the Newell’s and Rosario Central clubs.
Two people on a motorcycle fired 11 shots at a van packed with Newell’s fans on their way back to Buenos Aires after attending an Old Boys match in Rosario.
The shooting led to the death on the spot of Walter Palacios, 39. Jose Leonardo Boladian, 34, died later at Clemente Alvarez Emergency Hospital.
Also wounded were two women, Walter’s 29-year-old sister and a girl of 9 identified only as Lelia, the Rosario daily La Capital said.
The van has been used for the past five years to transport some 15 Newell’s fans living in Buenos Aires to the games.
The two assailants were wearing jackets with the colors of the Rosario Central club, Newell’s historic rival.
