Condolences are pouring in for the popular Sao Paulo rapper MC Daleste, 20, who was shot to death on stage while performing in Campinas, outside of Sao Paulo.
MC Daleste whose real name is Daniel Pellegrine was performing at a public housing project in San Martin in Campinas late Saturday, when he was apparently shot in the abdomen.
The incident became public knowledge when a graphic video of the incident was posted on line. Condolences have been pouring onto the singer’s Facebook ever since.
The singer, performing in his native Portuguese, was in mid-song when you hear a pop on the video and see him collapse instantly to the shock of his bandmates.
The younger performer was part of the Sao Paulo rap-funk scene which is often centered in the violent and poverty-stricken favelas. Billboard points out that On “Apologia,” one of MC Daleste’s songs, he raps “killing the police is our goal” and recites a list of weapons over the continuous sound of gunfire.
Authorities have not announced an arrest or suspects in the case.
As a report came in late 2012 showing that Brazil had seen as many violent deaths—500,000—over the past 10 years as Somalia’s 20-year civil war.
