Five guards and a state employee were wounded when a subject opened fire Thursday outside the Governor’s Palace in Saltillo, the capital of the northern Mexican state of Coahuila, officials said.

“It was a direct attack on the guards, wounding five police officers and a civilian who was working there,” state security spokesman Jesus Carranza told Efe.

The subject, identified as Jose Maria Segura Gutierrez, was arrested, Carranza said.

Segura Gutierrez opened fire on the palace, where Gov. Ruben Moreira has his office, around 9:00 a.m., the state security spokesman said.

Moreira was not in the building at the time of the attack, which occurred just before a Mother’s Day event was to start, Carranza said.

Mexico will celebrate Mother’s Day on Friday.

Army troops, state police and Federal Police officers set up a perimeter around the Governor’s Palace.

Coahuila has been at the center of a turf war among the Los Zetas, Gulf and Sinaloa drug cartels in recent years, leading to a spike in violence in the state.
