Photo: Spanish Mother Arrested After Newborn Rescued from Drain
A 26-year-old woman has been arrested after police say she gave birth to a live baby and attempted to dispose of it by sending it down a drain.
Police in the city of Alicante, Spain arrived at a building on Sunday after someone called to report hearing what sounded like meows coming from below a manhole cover where the building’s drains converged.
Thinking they were rescuing a cat, emergency workers were shocked to discover the sounds were not coming from a trapped cat, but rather a newborn baby boy.
The two-day-old child has reportedly been in the drain for 40 hours when he was rescued.
Weighing just 4 pounds, 6 ounces, the baby was found wrapped in plastic bags and still had his umbilical cord attached. His arm was broken and he was said to have suffered other, unspecified injuries as well. He was taken to the hospital and is said to be in serious, but non life-threatening condition.
Authorities say the mother, whose name has not been released, was arrested at Alicante’s General Hospital. She had reportedly arrived at the hospital on June 21. She claimed she’d had a miscarriage and was being treated.
When officers arrived, the mother admitted she had tried to abort the baby, but was never able to afford an abortion.
She was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Police are still trying to determine is she acted alone or if someone helped her put the
