Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is once again pushing to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill, stating that next week, he will hold a hearing focused on the economic effects of immigration, and the arguments for and against it.

“We decided we ought to start highlighting the fact that immigration creates jobs rather than takes them away,” Schumer told Politico. “Everyone agreed that is how we are going to start talking about immigration, as a job creator.”

Sen. Schumer is hoping that by focusing on immigrants’ role in the U.S. economy now it will garner more attention, as the main focus in Washington appears to be fixing the economy.

Though the Center for Immigration Studies, which advocates for stricter immigration laws, used a recently released a report highlighting the rising unemployment rate as a means of saying undocumented immigration is bad for the economy, Sen. Schumer said the July 26 hearing will argue the positive impact immigration has.

“Our immigration talks are moving along, and surprisingly well and regularly,” said Schumer, chairman of the Judiciary Committee’s immigration subcommittee. “Immigration is a rough road and I’m making no predictions, but (the talks) are clearly not dead.”
