Florida Republican Senator, Marco Rubio, days into his Senatorial job is on a five-day visit to Pakistan and Afghanistan.  He is traveling with other Republican senators including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

This fact-finding mission is one of the first officials acts of the high profile Hispanic senator from Florida.  The stated purpose of the trip was to see firsthand what the U.S. involvement in the region is and whether things are heading in the right direction.

Rubio commented to Florida press, speaking in both English and Spanish, that he would prefer to avoid the artifical time line for withdrawal as President Obama has suggested.  He is opposed to setting any dates for withdrawal and wants to see withdrawal benchmarks based on the progress of the Afghan military and government.

Rubio did not discuss how the country would continue to finance a longer military presence in Afghanistan in light of the deficit he pledged to reduce.
