Selena Gomez is now added to the growing list of celebrities who have been victims of the dangerous ‘swatting’ prank. Swatting involves pranksters calling 911 and stating an emergency at the victim’s house unbeknownst to the victim that authorities have been called and without a real emergency existing.
Authorities arrived at the Sherman Oaks home of Gomez, Friday around 9:10pm CST after being told that her father had shot her mother inside the home and had over 20 weapons. The swatter then proceeded to tell authorities Selena’s father was planning on burning down her house, according to TMZ.
When officers arrived Gomez and her mother, Mandy Teefey, were at home and unaware they had been ‘swatted’. Her father, Ricardo Gomez, does not live with the singer and reportedly resides in Texas.
Typically authorities would respond to a call such as this with a fully armed SWAT team. The dangerous prank puts everyone’s safety at risk and withdraws critical police resources from real emergency situations.
Earlier in the day singer Justin Timberlake was the victim of a similar prank.
Other celebrity ‘swatting’ victims include P. Diddy, Rihanna, Tom Cruise, Simon Cowell and Miley Cyrus. A 12-year-old was recently arrested for conducting a ‘swat’ prank at the homes of Justin Beiber and Ashton Kutcher.
