A man by the name of Alexander Michael Herrera was arrested after attempting to open an airplane door mid-flight on Monday.

According to authorities, as Alaska Airlines flight began its decent into Portland, Oregon, Herrera, 23, began making “unusual statements” and tried to open the plane’s door.

Some of the 137 passengers aboard the flight reportedly tackled Herrera and held him down until members of the flight crew were able to restrain him with shoelaces and seat beat extenders.

Authorities have not revealed what Herrera was saying before he was subdued, but the airline says he sat calmly as the plane continued its decent and landed safely.

He was handed over to federal authorities and was booked into Multnomah County Detention Center on a charge of interfering with a flight crew. He was expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.

Flight No. 132 was traveling from Anchorage to Portland.

Alaska Airlines stated, that while frightening, there was little danger of the door opening, as “the emergency door on the 737-800 is equipped with a lock to prevent it from being opened in-flight.”
