As time passes and hope fades, the search continues for seven American boating tourists in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. One American tourist has been confirmed dead when Erik, the fishing charter boat out of the San Felipe port, capsized due to an violent electrical storm at sea.  Thus far 19 of the tourists and all 16 crew members have been rescued either by the Mexican Navy or local fishermen.

Rescuers, which include the U.S. Coast Guard out of San Diego were remaining hopeful that the tourists, mostly from California, will be rescued in what are now calm waters.  Meanwhile the captain has been arrested by Mexican authorities in connection with the sinking of the Erik.

According to authorities the captain had been ordered by authorities not to leave port on Saturday due to a pending storm – clearly he defied those orders.  Other reports say the captain was arrested for operating without a license.

No official word from Mexican officials on the captain’s fate.
