41,000 donors from across the country have contributed to Gov. Jan Brewers defense fund, keeping Arizona residents off the hook so far. Brewer made the appeal to the nation for financial support and has since received $3.6 million dollars, while only having spent $440,000 so far in defenses.
The Arizona immigration law is facing several lawsuits that experts predict will end up costing several million dollars to defend.
Brewer recently disclosed that a donation had been received from an individual in Wyoming for $1.5 million dollars. The balance of the contributors primarily fall in $20, $50 or $100 donations made online. There was a surge in donations when Obama filed the Federal suit against the bill SB 1070.
The legal work done so far on defending the bill has been massive. With over 900 separate filings challenging the bill, it is impossible to estimate what defense of the Arizona bill could end up costing.
