Russian social-networking Web site VK aims to displace Facebook as the Peruvians’ favorite in the medium term as a first step toward establishing its presence throughout the Latin American market, its representatives said.
In a statement on the elcomercio.pe portal, the corporate vice president of VK, Ilya Perekopsky, said that to meet their goals they intend to win 2 million Peruvian users by 2015.
“Our goal is to obtain the first million users and then it will be much easier to duplicate and even quintuplicate that number, and so top the number of Facebook fans,” he said.
Perekopsky arrived in Lima with a trade mission of 60 Russian businessmen from the fields of tourism, hotels, technology and telecommunications.
The representative of VK for Peru and Latin America, Fernando Gonzalez, said they now have some 30,000 users in this country, which has been picked as the Russian network’s foothold for its further expansion in Latin America.
Gonzalez said the delegation of Russian businessmen is not only interested in VK as an advertising platform, but also in investing directly in Peru and evaluating local businesses that can be replicated in Russia.
