The Russian Ballet of St. Petersburg is in Mexico for an 18-city tour that will feature “Sleeping Beauty,” with the first performance scheduled for Wednesday in Mexico City, organizers said.

This is the second time that the respected ballet company has visited Mexico, where it presented “Swan Lake” last year.

The company, which was founded in 1990, brought 42 dancers to Mexico for its tour.

The ballet company emphasizes the training of dancers and all of its choreographers, directors, soloists and other dancers are graduates of the Vaganova Ballet Academy, which was founded in 1738 and is the world’s oldest ballet school.

The company’s mission is to preserve the traditional choreography of the Kirov Theater, now known as the Mariinsky Theater, which is the base of Russian classical dance.

The ballet company will perform in Pachuca, Puebla, Toluca, Queretaro, Culiacan, Mazatlan, Guadalajara, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosi, Leon, Texcoco, Morelia, Tlalnepantla, Jalapa, Veracruz, Villahermosa and Merida after opening in Mexico City.
