In a seemingly unwise move for someone trying to attract Latino voters, Mitt Romney’s campaign has been airing ads attacking fellow Republican Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum for confirming Sonia Sotomayor’s 1998 appointment to the federal circuit court.

The ad states that Santorum’s 1998 vote “put [Sotomayor] on a path to the Supreme Court,” something that voters should apparently be upset about.

This is the second time Romney campaign ads have gone after Santorum for his voting for the so-called “liberal judge,” the first occurring in February.

With a statement from Romney’s campaign attempting to deflect the issue at hand, saying, “Once again President Obama and his liberal allies are resorting to dishonest smears in an attempt to distract Hispanics from his abysmal record as President,” one has to wonder how these ads intended to help him win the Latino/Hispanic vote even without the supposed “smear campaign”.

Monday, a national poll showed that Hispanics “prefer Obama to any GOP candidate by a six-to-one margin.”

When trying to win a major voting bloc in an upcoming election, it is probably not wise to attack one of that bloc’s most prominent figures.
