Tuesday, U.S. Border Patrol agents found several high-powered weapons, including a rocket launcher near the Rio Grande on the U.S. side of the U.S.-Mexico border.
Agents seized six assault rifles, one rocket launcher, a grenade launcher, and three packages of C-4 explosives.
The agents found the weapons and explosives, along with ammunition, in a bad spotted in a black bag in brush near Fronton.
“These deadly weapons could have had a devastating impact on communities on both sides of the border and to our agents or other law enforcement officers,” said Chief Patrol Agent Rosendo Hinojosa in a release from CBP. “The vigilance of these agents potentially saved lives that would have been lost had these weapons ended up in the hands of violent criminals. Criminal activity in the Rio Grande Valley will not be tolerated and we will continue to disrupt the efforts of smuggling organizations.”
The weapons were turned over to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives for further investigation.
Since the drug war began in Mexico in 2006, more than 42,000 people have died, some by weapons believed to have been bought in the U.S.
