Dominican second baseman Robinson Cano has signed a 10-year, $240 million deal - one of the biggest in baseball history - with the Seattle Mariners, who are gambling that the slugger can help lead them to the World Series for the first time.

The terms of the deal have not been officially disclosed, but ESPN baseball insider and analyst Jim Bowden said in a tweet that the 31-year-old Cano received a full no-trade clause as part of the agreement.

Cano and his team of agents, led by hip-hop mogul Jay-Z, met Thursday night in Seattle with Mariners management and received the whopping offer.

It easily topped the $175 million - over fewer years - that his former team, the New York Yankees, were willing to pay to keep him.

The player still must undergo a physical, but the deal is expected to close next week.

If the contract is finalized, it will be tied for the third-richest in big-league history after the 10-year, $252-million deal Alex Rodriguez signed in 2000 with the Texas Rangers and the 10-year, $275 million extension he signed with the Yankees in 2007.

Another Dominican slugger, Albert Pujols, signed for 10 years and $240 million with the Los Angeles Angels in 2011.

Cano, a five-time All Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, has a .309 batting average with 204 home runs and 822 RBIs for his career and is considered one of the best-hitting second baseman in baseball history.

With this big splash in the free-agent market, the Mariners are looking to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2001 and provide much-needed run support for 2010 American League Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez and Japanese starter Hisashi Iwakuma, who finished third in the 2013 AL Cy Young voting.
