A Salvadoran migrant who was returning to the United States was killed and 12 other people were injured in a traffic accident in northwestern Mexico, officials said.

Margarita Duran Vazquez, a 40-year-old who lived in Bakersfield, California, was returning to the United States after the Christmas holidays.

Seven of the injured, all of whom are Mexicans, are listed in serious condition, Sinaloa Attorney General’s Office spokesmen told Efe.

The accident occurred Saturday at kilometer 83 of the Benito Juarez La Costera highway in Sinaloa when the pick-up truck driven by Juan Manuel MuƱiz Rivera and carrying seven other people to California had a blowout in a tire.

The blowout caused the vehicle to swerve into oncoming traffic and hit another pick-up with California tags driven by Julio Alejandro Fuentes Lind, the AG’s office said.

A Sinaloa state government helicopter transported the injured to hospitals in the cities of Guamuchil and Culiacan.
