The intense acting of Ricky Martin and Elena Roger in a new stage production of “Evita” transports New York audiences to Buenos Aires where the plot evolves from the contradictory personality of Eva Peron.
Martin returns to Broadway where he debuted in 1995 in “Los Miserables,” this time in the role of Che, the voice of the people and narrator of the story, whom the actor’s charismatic personality brings to life.
Elena Roger plays a more than believable Eva Peron (1919-1952) in her New York debut, while Michael Cerveris portrays Juan Peron.
New York theater-goers, who since March 12 have attended the previews leading up to Thursday’s premiere, have been entranced by the acting of Roger and Martin, who dazzle with their talent in song, dance and stage presence.
Ricky Martin was grateful for the crowds’ support and the chance to finally “savor” the debut after eight weeks of previews.
“It’s been a lot of work. Today was a moment for the cast to savor and enjoy. Everyone in the audience was our friend and what we did was enjoy the moment and celebrate” the debut, the 40-year-old superstar told Efe.
Roger told Efe that the premiere was “wonderful, moving. The audience was always with us, we felt the laughter, the applause.”
