The replica of a 16th century galleon that sails the world’s seas spreading the story of Spanish navigation, arrived Monday in Miami for the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon’s discovery of Florida.

The ship sailed to Miami from Puerto Rico, where it was visited by 10,500 people since it opened to the public in early March at the Port of San Juan.

It will remain in Miami until April 28, after which it will dock along Florida’s east coast at such destinations as Cape Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale and St. Augustine.

Aboard the ship will be the “Viva Florida 500 Galleon” expo, which shows visitors the routes that Spanish galleons sailed in the days of the conquistadors.

The project basically aims to raise awareness about the historic ties between Florida and Spain.
