U.S. Representative Charlie Gonzalez, a Democrat from Texas has announced he will not be seeking re-election after serving Texas’ 20th congressional district for more than 14 years.

The 66-year-old Democratic congressman is also the Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairman and a strong advocate for Latino voting rights.  He was one of several Democratic lawmakers that sued Texas over redistricting issues that would allow for more Latino representation.

The seven-term congressman will end his career when the current session of Congress ends and not seek re-election in 2012.  Gonzalez succeeded his father Henry Gonzalez who served in congress for over 35 years.

President Obama upon hearing Gonzalez’ plans to retire issued the following statement:  “Michelle and I wish him and his family the very best and join the people of Texas in thanking him for his many years of service.”
