Newly elected Puerto Rican Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla announced that he plans on offering legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants living on the island to obtain driver’s licenses.
The Governor was speaking at a commemoration ceremony for one of Puerto Rico’s heroes, Luis Muñoz Marin, when he made the announcement. The largest beneficiary of this legislation, should it pass, would be Dominicans that make up the largest group of undocumented on the island.
The Governor will use his executive powers and a vote by the legislature to provide more privileges to the undocumented living in Puerto Rico. Garcia Padilla is also seeking to offer public health care to the undocumented. He is also ensuring access to public education without regard to immigration status through executive order.
Puerto Rico is a territory of the U.S. and Puerto Ricans are considered U.S. citizens and therefore will not directly benefit from these initiatives.
