Puerto Rico Rings in New Year with 13 Murders in 5 Days

Puerto Rico had a total of 13 murders in the first five days of 2014, four of them during a single night, police said.

Among the victims was Gilberto de Jesus Casas, 43, a limousine driver and creator of “Mi Pana Gillito,” a popular character in Puerto Rico on social networks.

The fatality, brother of television actor Javier de Jesus, was taking his girlfriend home after going to a Christmas party, and when they got to where she lived, they were assaulted by armed men out to steal the vehicle.

De Jesus Casas confronted the assailants with his regulation firearm, but both he and one of the attackers were shot dead.

His death was mourned on social networks, where even Calle 13’s Residente prayed that he “rest in peace.” Hours later a vehicle was found that is believed to have been used by the assailants.
