A player with the second division soccer team Union Magdalena was fatally shot by assailants traveling on a motorcycle, Colombian police said.

Ferley Reyes, 29, was shot while at a sidewalk hair salon in the Caribbean city of Santa Marta, the area police commander, Col. Juan Carlos Restrepo, told reporters.

Reyes’ teammate Luis Diaz Asprilla was wounded in the attack.

Diaz was taken to a Santa Marta hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

Neither player had reported receiving any threats and authorities are working to determine a motive for the shooting.

Two other Union Magdalena players, Julio Murillo and Carlos Angulo, were also at the scene, but escaped unharmed, according to media accounts.

Though now in the second division, Union Magdalena was once a powerhouse, winning the league championship in 1968. Long-time Colombian international Carlos “Pibe” Valderrama, a Santa Marta native, began his professional career with the club.
