Spanish singer-songwriter Alejandro Sanz was voted the Pop Male Artist of the Year at Univision’s Premio Lo Nuestro awards ceremony, during which tribute was paid to late Mexican singer Jenni Rivera.

“I didn’t expect to take home this prize. I want to thank my fans who are the ones who are always supporting me and encouraging me and my children Manuela, Dylan, Alexander, who are watching me on television,” Sanz said Thursday night after he was chosen for the award in voting by Univision viewers.

The Spaniard, who has won 16 Latin Grammys and three Grammy prizes throughout his career, also won the Award for Excellence - a lifetime achievement honor - at the ceremony at the American Airlines Arena in Miami.

Rivera, who died in a plane crash in December at the age of 43, won the Artist of the Year, Pop Female Artist of the Year and Regional Mexican Female Artist of the Year prizes, as well as the Pop Song of the Year and Pop Album of the Year trophies for “A Cambio de Que” and “Joyas Prestadas,” respectively.

In one of the most touching moments of the evening, Rivera’s daughters went on stage to receive her award for Pop Female Artist of the Year.

One of the daughters lifted the prize into the air to dedicate it to her mother, while the audience rose to their feet in tribute to the popular Mexican regional singer known as the “Queen of Banda.”

Only American bachata artist Prince Royce topped Rivera for number of prizes, taking home six awards, including Tropical Album of the Year (“Phase II”), Tropical Song of the Year (“Incondicional”), Tropical Male Artist of the Year and Tropical Contemporary Artist of the Year.

Royce also won Collaboration of the year for “El Verdadero Amor Perdona,” a duet with Mexican rockers Mana, and Rock/Alternative Song of the Year for that same track.

The New Artist of the Year prize went to Mexican tribal house gruop 3Ball MTY, while Mexican pop-rock duo Jesse & Joy won Video of the Year for “Corre” and Pop Group/Duo of the Year.

Puerto Rican reggaeton duo Wisin & Yandel won Urban Album of the Year for “Lideres” and Urban Artist of the Year.
