Pope Benedict XVI has named Victor Rene Rodriguez Gomez to be the bishop of Valle de Chalco, Mexico, the Vatican said Thursday.

The 62-year-old Rodriguez Gomez was serving as auxiliary bishop of Texoco.

Rodriguez Gomez, who was born in San Martin de las Piramides, Mexico state, in 1950, was ordained in 1976 and holds a theology degree from the Universidad Pontificia de Mexico.

He served as a parish priest at several churches and as an episcopal pastoral vicar at the cathedral in Texcoco.

Rodriguez Gomez was named bishop of Tiburnia in 2006 and auxiliary bishop of Texcoco, where he has been working.

He was elected secretary-general of the Mexican Bishops Conference in November 2009.
