Pope Francis begged pardon Friday for the sexual abuse of children committed by “quite a few” Roman Catholic priests.

“The Church is aware of this damage, it is personal, moral damage carried out by men of the Church, and we will not take one step backward with regard to how we will deal with this problem, and the sanctions that must be imposed,” the pontiff told a Catholic children’s NGO.

Francis interrupted his prepared address to improvise a few words of apology for the evil perpetrated by priests on minors.

“I feel compelled to personally take on all the evil committed by some priests, quite a few in number, obviously not compared to the number of all the priests, to personally ask for forgiveness for the damage they have done for having sexually abused children,” the pope said.

Afterwards he resumed his address to the delegation from the International Catholic Child Bureau, known by the French acronym BICE, explaining that “in a well-constituted society, privileges should be reserved for children and the elderly, because the future of a people is in their hands.”

“The children because they certainly have the strength to carry forward their people’s history. The elderly because they are their people’s font of wisdom and must be able to contribute that wisdom,” he said.
