A state legislator was killed in a machete attack in Morelia, the capital of the western Mexican state of Michoacan, officials said.
Osbaldo Esquivel Lucatero, a member of the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, was hacked to death around 3:20 p.m. Wedneday under an overpass on the Morelia-Patzcuaro highway, Michoacan Attorney General Marco Vinicio Aguilera Garibay said.
Esquivel Lucatero, who was with his brother, was being interviewed in a pick-up truck by a reporter from the Tierra Caliente region, where the legislator was from, when the attack occurred, the AG said.
The interview was interrupted by four men who drove up in a white automobile and forced Esquivel Lucatero and his companions to get out of the pick-up truck, investigators said.
The assailants forced the lawmaker, his brother and the journalist to lie face down on the ground and attacked them with machetes.
Eyewitnesses called paramedics, who transported the men to the private Star Medica clinic, where Esquivel Lucatero was pronounced dead two hours later.
Michoacan Gov. Jesus Reyna Garcia condemned the killing and ordered prosecutors to conduct a thorough investigation.
Esquivel Lucatero previously served as mayor of Buenavista Tomatlan, a city in the Tierra Caliente region, where a self-defense group was formed in March to fight the Caballeros Templarios drug cartel.
The leftist politician was arrested by federal prosecutors on May 26, 2009, along with 10 other mayors, 16 Michoacan state officials, a judge and several state police officers in “Operation Michoacanazo.”
Esquivel Lucatero and the others were accused of having links to the Familia Michoacana drug cartel.
Los Caballeros Templarios was formed by former members of La Familia Michoacana.
All of the suspects were released a few months later.
Esquivel Lucatero was murdered less than 24 hours after Oaxaca state legislator Everardo Hugo Hernandez Guzman, another PRD member, was killed by a lone gunman in the city of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan.
The 53-year-old Hernandez Guzman was murdered around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday as he was dining at a restaurant in Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan, the Oaxaca Attorney General’s Office said.
Hernandez Guzman was also a teacher and mayor-elect of the city of San Andres Cabecera Nueva.
