Federal police believe that the five suspects killed this week in an operation in the northern state of Sonora include an associate of Sinaloa drug cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, Mexico’s National Security Commission said Friday.

Authorities are finding it difficult to confirm that Gonzalo Inzunza Inzunza was among the dead because the surviving suspects removed the five bodies after Wednesday’s confrontation, the commission said in a statement.

The police operation was the result of “intelligence work” in collaboration with the Attorney General’s Office, the armed forces and Sonora state law enforcement agencies.

Federal police tracked the man they think was Inzunza to a villa inside a residential complex in Puerto Peñasco, a town overlooking the Gulf of California.

Police, who were fired on as they approached the residence, used two U.S.-supplied Black Hawk helicopters to take out “at least 10 vehicles,” according to the commission’s statement

Gonzalo Inzunza, 42, was part of a criminal network including Guzman and another Sinaloa cartel leader, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, the commission said.

At the villa, police confiscated 14 assault rifles, four handguns, five grenades, nearly 2,400 rounds of ammunition and 16 vehicles, including an armored SUV.

Two federal police received gunshot wounds in the operation, but are out of danger, the National Security Commission said.
