One Colombian soldier died and eight others were hospitalized after they ate pork that had apparently been poisoned in a rural area of Arauca province, which borders on Venezuela, local media reported.
The soldiers were in a jungle area near the town of Tame and evidently ate meat that had been given to them by a young man.
The seriousness of the soldiers’ condition required that they be transported by helicopter to the San Vicente de Paul Hospital in Arauca city, the provincial capital.
According to reports about the incident, the soldiers belong to the No. 5 Mobile Brigade and ate pork that had evidently been infused with rat poison.
A special group with the Attorney General’s Office and an army commission were sent to the zone to establish the facts in the case.
Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased soldier, but it was reported that he died after being admitted to the hospital in Tame.
The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia guerrillas, or FARC, and the National Liberation Army (ELN) rebels are active in the region where the incident occurred.
